03.23.08 - SMAsh RADIO SEEKS NEW INTERN
The upcoming March episode will mark the farewell of SMAsh Radio intern Sarah Steel. In a few short weeks, she will be heading off to the blustery streets of Cincinnati (home of WKRP) to break into the local communications industry. We wish her much luck and success. Thank you, Sarah, we'll miss you!

This, however, leaves a position open on the SMAsh Radio team, and if you are seeking a career in radio, New Media, music production or PR / marketing, this position might be a great way to gain some real experience while at the same time supporting the struggling artists in your area. Or if you have been listening from the wings, wanting to "get involved" in the music scene, well, here's your chance to help out on an award-winning and widely-syndicated podcast dedicated to promoting artists and bands in the Tampa Bay area and all over the Southeast.

Responsibilites will include:
1. Attending local concerts to solicit CDs and network with bands (I know, what a drag!)
2. Solicitation of MP3s/press kits from local/regional artists.
3. Promotions - flyering / postering / spreading the word
4. Occasional Web site maintenance
5. MySpace bulletins + event postings
6. Assisting in the production and promotion of SMA events (including showcase concerts and media appearances)

Must have own transportation and be at least 18 years of age. Knowledge of HTML, XML and audio production a plus. Please e-mail Joran at info@smaflorida.com if interested.

03.08.08 - JORAN on TBO's "COUCH POTATOES" PODCAST
Last week I was asked to be a guest on the Couch Potatoes podcast with Rommie Johnson and Stephen Hammill (also of Life of Pi). It was a roundtable discussion (part 2) about local record labels, methods of distribution, the scene, etc. It's pretty entertaining, and the other guests were Marshall Dickson (24 Hour Service Station, REAX) and Keith Ulrey (New Granada). So, yeah, it was cool. The best part was the half hour conversation afterward in the parking lot, but unfortunately, we didn't roll tape on that. Here's the Feed.

08.22.07 - CITY OF SEMINOLE TRIES TO BAN ALL AGES SHOWS!
Last year, the counties of Sarasota and Manatee passed ordinances banning those under 21 from bars and nightclubs in an effort to prevent underage drinking. It has now come to our own backyard. The City of Seminole (located in Pinellas County) is attempting to pass legislation (in the form of Amendment 08) that would ban those under 21 from places of business that serve alcohol and that have a capacity of over 100 persons (with a few convenient exceptions).

The arguments are endless about whether or not this will actually curb the problem or simply force minors to find other places to sneak drinks (like their homes for example). But there is no question that it will definitely put a dent in ticket sales to concerts and events at places like Boomerz Boiler Room, Page II Nightclub and more that depend on regional and touring acts to pay the bills. And music aside, the rights of our youth are being severely limited because of the actions or mistakes of a select and poorly-behaved few.

The Pinellas County-based musicians’ organization Southeast Music Alliance publicly fought these efforts last year to no avail. Manatee County in particular made every effort to stall any grassroots mobilization (including moving meetings forward to thwart public outcry, skewing polls and data during the course of the meetings and sitting silent for periods of time to let the meeting’s timer run out).

If the City of Seminole decides to pass Amendment 08 (the full, 16-page PDF can be viewed HERE), the questions remain - How much longer will a club like Boomerz last? Is the deliberate exemption of venues such as sporting events, art galleries, skating rinks and bowling alleys an attempt to pin the “evils” of rock and roll and restless youth on the bars and nightclubs? Will other cities or counties see legitimacy in their actions and follow suit?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1) Sign the online petition - http://www.petitiononline.com/DM399/petition.html
2) If anyone would like to show their support or voice their opinion on this matter, the City of Seminole will hold a workshop on Wednesday, September 19 at 6 p.m. to work through the issues. There is no public comment during the workshop on the 19th, but the workshop is open to the public. There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. allowing public comments at 3 minutes each preceding a final vote on the issue. If you’d like to speak, simply get there early and give your name to the City Clerk. Her name is Lesley and she is very helpful. Seminole City Hall is located at: 9199 113th Street North, Seminole, FL 33772-5226. Phone: 727-391-0204.
